What verbal memory is
Recognition memory is the ability to know that you have met a word before, not to summon it from a blank page. That distinction sits at the heart of this test. When a word appears, your only job is to decide whether it feels familiar from earlier in the run, so you are reading a "have I seen this" signal rather than retrieving anything. The two systems behave very differently in daily life. You can spot a face in a crowd in an instant, yet stall completely on the person's name, because recognising a face is the easy job and recalling a name is the hard one. Endel Tulving (1972) also split long-term memory into episodic memory, your record of specific events, and semantic memory, your store of word meanings and facts. This test leans on the episodic side: not what a word means, but whether it turned up a moment ago.
How words are remembered
Several patterns shape which words stick. One is the word frequency effect described by George Mandler (1980): very common words can actually be harder to flag as "seen", because they already feel familiar before the test even starts, so the genuine familiarity of having met them here is harder to separate from background familiarity. Position matters too. The first few words and the most recent ones are remembered better than those in the middle, the classic primacy and recency pattern. The deepest lever is how you process each word. Craik and Lockhart (1972) framed this as levels of processing: words handled for meaning, linked to an image or a personal association, are remembered far better than words skimmed for their letters alone. That is the quiet strategy this test rewards. People who tie each new word to something, a picture, a rhyme, a small story, hold the growing list together for longer.
What affects your score
Attention is the single biggest factor. Recognition memory collapses the moment your focus drifts, so a quiet room and one honest attempt will beat a distracted run every time. Age plays a gentler role here than you might expect: verbal memory holds up comparatively well across adulthood, while visual and spatial memory tend to fade faster, so an older adult often does better on a word task than on a grid one. Your native language matters as well, because words you have heard for years carry a strong familiarity signal, and a test in a second language forces deeper, slower processing. Sleep feeds into all of this through consolidation, the overnight process that stabilises new memories, so a rested brain tags "seen" more reliably. Stress works the other way: sustained cortisol disrupts the hippocampus, the structure most involved in forming new memories, which is why a tense, rushed run usually lands lower than a calm one.
What your score means
Read these bands as a rough guide, not a clinical scale. The percentiles come from aggregated results for this recognition task.
- Under 25 is a low result here, and far more often a sign of distraction or tiredness than of poor memory. A calm retry usually climbs several points.
- 25 to 40 sits in the below-average range, with 40 marking the median, the score the middle person reaches.
- 40 to 55 is the typical band for a healthy adult, the range most people land in once they settle into the rhythm of the task.
- 55 to 80 is a strong result, roughly the upper quarter rising toward the top few percent, showing an above-average recognition span.
- 80 and up is exceptional, the top sliver of players, the kind of score that reflects an unusually durable familiarity signal.
One run is only a snapshot. Mood, sleep, and focus all move the number, so treat a single score as a measure of this attempt rather than a fixed ceiling, and keep your best honest result rather than your first cold try.

Are words in a language that is not my own harder?
Yes, word familiarity plays a key role in verbal memory. Words you have heard for years in your native language trigger a stronger "familiar" signal in the brain, so they slot into recognition easily. Words in a second language are harder to remember because the brain has to process them more deeply, and that extra work shows up as a lower score. This test always uses the word pool of the language you selected, so you are tested in the language you are reading it in.
How does verbal memory change with age?
Gently, and more slowly than other kinds of memory. Verbal and recognition memory hold up comparatively well across adulthood, while visual and spatial memory tend to decline faster. That is why an alert older adult can match or beat a younger person on a word task even when a grid-based memory test would favour the younger one. Vocabulary and word knowledge often keep growing for decades, which helps offset the small slowing that does occur.
Recognition or recall: which is easier?
Recognition is much easier. Recognising that a word is familiar, which is all this test asks, leans on a simple "seen it" signal. Recall, producing a word from nothing, demands far more from memory, which is why fill-in-the-blank questions feel so much harder than multiple choice. This test is purely a recognition task: you never have to retrieve a word, only judge whether it has appeared before.
Does stress affect my score?
Yes. Sustained stress raises cortisol, which disrupts activity in the hippocampus, the brain region most involved in forming and flagging new memories. A tense, rushed run tends to land lower than a calm one, not because your memory has changed but because stress interferes with the tagging of "seen". For a fairer reading, test when you are relaxed and unhurried.
Does practice help?
Only a little. You can pick up habits that lift your score slightly, like deliberately tying each new word to an image or association, and removing distractions reliably helps. But your underlying recognition capacity is fairly stable, so the gains plateau quickly. Practising this test mostly makes you better at this test, not at verbal memory in general.
How is remembering 100 words even possible?
Because recognition memory has a far larger capacity than recall. You could never list a hundred words from memory, but judging whether each one is familiar is a much lighter task, and the brain is remarkably good at the "have I met this before" signal. That gap between what you can recall and what you can recognise is exactly what this test puts on display.
